Some Facts & Stats about last year’s 2014 Edition

    • Called a hack-a-thon because it brings together ‘hackers’ (as in coders) working 30 hours with a 4-hour interruption.
    • Fourth marathon of coders organised partially in a Parliament, with the idea of the‘old’/legislators meeting the‘new’/coders
    • Theme was ‘Increasing Democratic Participation’ and focused on creating tools to increase participation and transparency in the EU.
    • 30-hour event with 24-hours coding by 41 participants (20% women).
    • 11 nationalities represented.
    • 8 projects.
    • 5000,00 Eur prize for the winning team.
    • Co-hosting of the event by MEPs Paunova, Reda and Schaake and participation of European Commission Vice-President Ansip and Belgian Minister De Croo.
    • Intervention by Vint Cerf, one of the fathers of the Internet.
    • Support from civil society: Applications Developers Alliance, BEUC, CDT, EDRi, Nurpa, Transparency International, Freedom of the Press Foundation and Wikimedia.
    • Sponsors: Facebook, Google, ICANN and Netflix.
    • Coders assisted by engineers from Google and Facebook.
